"Symmetry" / OCT 2022 / Chipboard, brown paper, wire

For this sculpture, I chose to focus on several key ideas: shape, scale, weight, symmetry, and subversion of expectations. The main shape throughout my design is a hexagon. I wanted to have two halves that played off one another. Piece A leads the eye downward going from small hexagons to big ones. Piece B on the other hand leads the eye the reverse direction. They are almost reversely symmetrical. The scale comes into play when the sculpture is displayed properly, with a spotlight above each piece to show their shadows. Piece A, because the larger hexagon is on the bottom, you would expect it to have the larger shadow. This is not the case however due to the way light works. This is a subversion of the viewer’s expectations. It is Piece B that has the far larger shadow. The pieces are the same size but because one is the reverse of the other their shadows have different scales. Additionally, Piece A is positioned to look heavier than piece B, it is closer to the ground. This again plays into the idea of weight and density. Piece A looks heavier, looks larger, so the viewer expects the shadow to reflect this.
